Friday Green Slip (old version)
*Friday Tiger Slip (currently use)*
So...I decided to join the "blogger" world as of July 2012. Please enjoy hearing all about my 3rd grade classroom. Feel free to take ideas and send along your suggestions. Thanks!
This is a letter I send home with students every Friday. It lets parents know how their child's week was behaviorally and academically. It's listed below, enjoy!

Anyone else out there taking way too many minutes out of the day deciding whose work you have and who the culprits are that have not turned theirs in yet OR forgot their names?? :) Okay, so good, I am not the only one. I decided to create a self checkoff list for my 3rd graders. It sits right beside the hand in baskets. It takes some teaching, but they can do it!! It has worked SOOO well this year! <3!!! Lampe Freebie: Assignment Turn In Page www.online-stopwatch.com/countdown-clock/full-screen/ Above - This is on online timer, so the kids can see how much time they have left. Amaaazing!! www.online-stopwatch.com/full-screen-stopwatch/ This is a stopwatch that counts up. Both of these are amazing visuals to use in the classroom, especially if you can use your ELMO to make it nice and big. Both are must use sites!! I plan on using them during Daily 5/CAFE rotations as a gentle reminder to my lil' busy bees...Time is a' flying.... Enjoy! Miss L I made this sign for my 3rd graders to sign on meet the teacher night. It helped me keep track of all the kids I met that night. Now, it's hanging outside our class
A few years ago I decided to come up with a way to make the rules more meaningful to the kids. Here's what we do: Brainstorm good rules in pods, then share out as a class, while I write them down. (The kids are going to be a lot more likely to share out whole group if you let them make sure their ideas are good by sharing with peers first). Next we fit them into categories. Most rules will always fit under "Be Respectful, Come Prepared, and Be Productive" and it keeps the rules list short and tidy. After we come up with the list, the kids draw pictures that show each rule. I attach their pictures to each rules poster and put them up on the wall. Now that's what I call ownership! ;) Once the rules posters are made we discuss them one more time and each child picks one of their pictures to explain. And for the finale'...each child signs the rules contract showing they know and understand our classroom rules.
It's so important to share your students' work pieces. I, like many teachers, have limited space in my classroom to do this. So...I decided to make a space. I took clothespins and fixed them to the wall. Then I used my label maker to give each child their very own personal spot. I will make sure to switch out their work throughout the year.
What a nifty idea for a bathroom pass. Half the time the kids take the pass into the bathroom it comes back wet!?! I NEVER ask why...ewwww! So, this year I am having the kids use sanitizer bottles as restroom passes. They simply put it on their desk, use the RR, come back and take a squirt, then replace it by the window. AND that's how I know their hands have been cleaned. Plus, if it's on their desk I know they're in the bathroom. It's a win, win folks!
Below is one of my many bulletin boards I'm using this year. Yes, reading is rewarding in so many ways. The title came from sheer cleverness on my part. JK! This year I am trying something new to reward reading minutes. I got the idea from none other than pinterest. Each child has a dog tag with their name and year on it. For every 100 minutes read, they earn a bead to put on their chain. I have beads of every color and plan on purchasing more. That way the kids can decorate them however they'd like to! Bring on the books and beads!!
Several years ago I created 3-L's Tiger Pride board. The kids and I LOVE it!! I use tigers simply because WE are the Gilbert "Tigers" hence the Tiger Pride title. Very fitting, I know! :) This is used as a whole class incentive program. When all the children are doing as they should, a teacher comments on how wonderfully they are behaving, everyone stays on green or above for the day...the possibilities are endless..., I put up a tiger. Each tiger in the bag has a number on the back that matches to our board. Tic tac toe, seven tigers in a row, and voila it's reward time. Let's party!!!
